It might sound like a leg injury, but actually, it’s a balaclava-wearing Irish rap trio.
Ready for an auditory shot to the knees? The hard-hitting, genre-bending rap trio Kneecap stand ready to blow you away in Eskelunden this summer. The Irish group consists of the rappers Mo Chara, Móglaí Bap and the balaclava-wearing DJ Próvaí who haunt stages with uncompromising and intense musical style. Kneecap are known for their raw and politically charged sound that push the limits of Irish rap by fusioning the Gaelic language with hard beats and pointed lyrics.
Since the debut with “C.E.A.R.T.A.”, the group has mesmerized listeners with rhymes that explore everything from political themes to the everyday life in Northern Ireland. The lyrics often revolve around a satirical and humor-filled take on subjects like Brexit, police brutality and the Irish national identity.
Their newest record Fine Art builds upon their unique blend of political messages, humor and energy. The album has been praised for its creative and provocative attitude and its continual pushing of boundaries within Irish hip hop. The Los Angeles Times reported on the record: “Their balance between anti-establishment lyrics, explosive delivery, graphic humor and unrelenting charm is reminiscent of early Eminem.”
Kneecap have also recently made their way into the movie business. Their self-titled film Kneecap depicts the genesis of the group and has received international acclaim for its in-depth and provocative exploration of modern Northern Ireland and the cultural revolt of youths in the area. The film was picked as the Irish contribution to the Academy Award for Best International Picture at the 97th edition of the awards.
Kneecap is the Irish rap trio you didn’t know you were missing.
